Roof Tiles and Slates

Slate Roofs

Slate is not only environmentally friendly but is also aesthetically pleasing, whether its Spanish, Welsh or Scotch slate there is several colours and sizes to suit all tastes and using slate means you can add designs and features to your roof to catch attention.

Energy-efficient

Slate is a very energy-efficient material. Because it is very dense, it can help keep your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.

Completely fire resistant

As a natural stone product, slate is completely fire resistant. A slate roof will resist high heat and temperatures, and fire.

Environmentally-friendly

Slate is a naturally-occurring material, and requires very little processing. Even when a slate roof must be replaced, the slates themselves can sometimes be re-used. Could be on another roofing project, or for other purposes, like flooring, and building garden pathways, or even driveways. Making them an environmentally friendly option.

Long lifespan of 100 years or more

With proper care, it’s not uncommon for a slate roof to last a 100 years. Some roofs can last 150 years with proper installation.

Concrete Tiles

The most popular choice when it comes to replacing an old roof as these tiles are a manmade cement/concrete and come in various colours and styles and being significantly cheaper and quicker to install, this is what makes them so popular. Although not  as long lasting as slate they still offer years of protection and make a property look attractive.

Cost effective

Concrete tiles are simple and easy to fabricate, a cost-effective perk that’s passed on to customers. Plus, when you factor in the long lifespan of concrete tile roofs, the pricing benefits are even more profound.

Durable and robust

When it comes to durability, concrete roof tiles run circles around some of the alternatives. Installed properly, concrete tiles offer excellent long-term performance and hold up against high winds, heavy rain and other wild weather.

A long lifespan

The average concrete tile roof has a lifespan of around 50 to 70 years which makes the material extremely cost effective in the long-term. Concrete tiles are virtually impervious to damage from rot and insects which means you won’t have to worry about decay.

Quick and easy installation

Labour costs are one of the biggest expenses associated with renovating or installing roofs. Quick and easy to install, concrete tiles overcome this challenge and offer customers excellent value for money.

Customise colours and styles

Incredibly versatile, concrete tiles can be customised to suit any architectural style. This makes them a great choice for projects of all shapes and sizes, whether you’re renovating a historic farmhouse or building a modern home. Choose from a variety of different styles, including flat, fluted, curved or interlocking. Concrete roof tiles can also be tinted to suit your colour palette.

Minimal maintenance

Concrete roof tiles require little to no maintenance which means you and your bank account can rest easy. They’re also quick and easy for professionals to replace should a tile become cracked or damaged.

An eco-friendly choice

Not only does the long lifespan make concrete roofs an eco-friendly choice, they’re also constructed from natural materials and minerals which means you’re not contributing to chemical pollution. Should your roof ever need to come down the concrete tiles can be ground down and recycled instead of sent to landfill.

Energy efficient

Thanks to the heavy thermal mass, concrete tiles also offer an energy efficient edge, helping to trap heat during the winter and regulate indoor temperatures. This means you can turn down your central heating and save on your energy bills.

And, with colour variations ranging from red to brown to golden, wood shingles undoubtedly provide your home with a beautiful and natural look.

Weather Resistant

Wood shingles are naturally weather resistant, as well as resistant to UV rays. There are also additional treatments you can make to ensure wood shingles are even more resistant to fire, bugs, moss and other fungus.

Durable, Flexible, & Strong

Wood shingles, specifically cedar wood shingles are incredibly durable, flexible and sturdy. They keep their shape, without warping too much under different weather conditions. They are also very sturdy, and can improve the overall strength of your roof when properly installed. Not to mention wood shingles can be stained, oiled and painted, offering you a range of finishing options to suit your individual style.

Soffits and Fascias

Whether replacing or over cladding there is several colours and styles to suit any individual taste from PVC to natural timbers we can supply and install to your requirements.

Fascias

The fascia acts as a vertical barrier between the outside and the edge of your roof, meaning it bears the brunt of the elements and protects the roof and the interior of your home from weather damage. It is often found in the area where the gutter is attached to the roof, which means it may have to support several gallons of water per second during heavy rain whilst supporting a bottom row of tiles. Most modern homes have a fascia board, but some older homes lack this feature.

It is therefore extremely important to keep an eye on your fascias for signs of wear, as whilst fascia usually last for years, they do need replacing if the fascia board becomes ages or water damaged.

Soffits

The soffit is the exposed section beneath the overhanging section of a roof. Without a soffit, when you looked up at your house, you would see exposed rafters instead, which is neither pretty nor efficient. If your rafters were exposed, they’d be likely to rot and threaten the stability of your roof, requiring a lot of extra financial support on your part.

Furthermore, soffits help to ventilate your attic as it usually has small holes to allow air to circulate. This is important in both summer and winter months, as air circulation keeps your attic from overheating in hot weather, but also prevents moisture build-up in the winter which could damage your rafters.

Guttering and Downpipes

From cleaning to repairing or just wanting your old gutters replaced we can do it all, today we are spoiled for choice when it comes to guttering as there is so much variety in colours, styles and material whether its plastic gutters to look like metal, or metal gutters that can be painted to a colour of your choosing.  There is an option for any property.

The gutter collects the rainwater that runs off the roof and channels it into a downpipe to transport it away from the property, protecting the foundation of the building from flooding.

Lead Work

Lead is a versatile metal used to weatherproof your roof. It can be bent, folded, shaped and welded to fit any obstacle on your roof whether it’s a valley, skew, box gutter, chimney or dormer we can supply and install lead to fit almost anything.

EXTREMELY DURABLE

One of the main reasons lead is used for roofing is that it is extremely durable against all forms of weather. This is due to the natural weatherproofing of the material and the efficiency of its thermal expansion and contraction. All roofing materials need to be able to expand when they heat up and contract when they get cold. However, for some materials, consistent movement of this type quickly takes a toll on durability. Lead has a natural flexibility that allows this process to happen without weakening the material.

LONG-LASTING

Lead is an incredibly long-lasting roofing material and can even last up to 200 years if properly installed, which is why it is often seen on churches and historical buildings. Lead is not used exclusively for old buildings, however, and can also be found on residential properties or modern buildings and is often the material of choice for flashing.

ECO-FRIENDLY

Lead is also one of the most eco-friendly roofing materials available. Lead roofing is endlessly recyclable because once it has finally reached the end of its lifespan on a roof, it can be melted down and reformed onto a new roof, without any compromise to its weatherproofing or durability. This means that lead roofing produces zero waste and is therefore much better for the environment than some other roofing materials.

MALLEABLE

Lead is very malleable which makes it easy to apply in most roofing applications. Lead’s flexibility is another reason why it has been used so often for the roofs of churches and historic buildings where awkward shapes such as spires need to be covered. It also makes it the perfect material for flashing around chimneys on sloped roofs.

RESISTANT TO CORROSION

Another reason why lead is used for roofing is that it has a natural resistance to corrosion. Heavy rainfall, snow and frost can all cause corrosion of roofing materials which deteriorate their ability to keep your home protected against leaks and also prevent heat from escaping. Lead is also highly resistant to sun damage and won’t show many signs of ageing such as fading.

SEALING PROPERTIES

One final reason why lead is used for roofing, and a key characteristic for any decent roof material, is that it has great sealing properties. It creates a tight fit even around awkward shapes and joints, therefore effectively keeping water and moisture out. This is also what makes it so good for flashing and covering joints that are often a point of vulnerability on roofs where water can make its way into the property.

Pointing

Pointing has numerous purposes, not only to finish a joint between materials to look good it also prevents weather penetration and blocks access to insects/unwanted guests, there is a good variety of colours and premixed mortars to suit all applications whether its common brick or sand stone, concrete or clay roof tiles mortar can be mixed to point many materials.

On tiled roofs, there are ridge tiles, also commonly known as capping tiles or sometimes as ridge capping tiles, which work to prevent water damage. Roof repointing is where we use a layer of flexible pointing material alongside cement mortar over the roof bedding to ensure that your roof tiles and ridge tiles are kept securely in place as well as secure any loose tiles. It also acts as a seal preventing water, moisture, and dust from coming through your roof, thus maintaining greater structural integrity and protecting against harsher elements such as strong wind.

If it is left unchecked and without maintenance, you risk cracking and deterioration in the pointing material. When the material experiences a crack or break, it can lead to water leaks and water damage in your home. That’s why it’s imperative to engage a reputable business, like us here at GAC Roofing to repoint your roof. Ideally, a roof repointing service should be carried out once every ten years.

Roughcasting and Rendering

Roughcasting is a great option, not only can it brighten up a property to look great its also a protective layer against the elements, with all the new products on the market today for roughcasting/rendering the life span of the materials are longer and application of the materials have gotten easier not to mention the variety of colours and aggregates are endless.

Roughcasting is the most popular type of exterior wall treatment you will see in Scottish homes as it’s a more cost-effective option and if installed correctly it’s built to stand the test of time. Roughcasting Materials consist of cement, sand, smaller gravel, pebbles, shells plaster and lime.

Roughcasting and rendering is designed to make your external walls more durable and water repellent. Lime used within the mixture enhances the breathability of your wall, preventing moisture from getting trapped and allowing it to escape from the surface. The waterproof benefits are one of the main reasons Roughcast rendering is used on Scottish homes.

Repairs

From patching roughcast to fixing gutter leaks or replacing broken, cracked or slipped tiles and slates we can repair almost anything related to your roof and cement work.

While your roof might usually feel like your last home improvement priority, it’s important to remember that your roof is your number one defence against the weather. It’s what keeps your home and family safe and dry.

If you’ve been putting off roof repairs, or you’ve quite honestly forgotten about roof maintenance,  you might want to rethink your home improvement priorities:

ROOFS SERIOUSLY AFFECT PROPERTY VALUE AND CURB APPEAL

If you’re considering selling your home within the next few years, you’ll really want to put some effort into that roof. The condition of your roof is one of the first questions a potential homebuyer is going to ask, and it’s one of those obvious features that you can’t really twist the truth on. A neglected roof is a very apparent thing  prospective buyers will be able to tell just driving up if you’ve kept it up or if something’s been left in disrepair for far too long. A roof that won’t need much maintenance post-sale could even allow you to raise your asking price.

THE SOONER IT’S FIXED, THE LESS IT WILL COST YOU

Even if you’re not planning on selling your home in the near future, it’s important to note that the sooner you get repairs done, the less you’ll have to spend in the long run. Nearly all roof damage will get progressively worse: if you’ve lost a tile, it can easily turn into a leak over time; if your roof has a leak, serious water damage can occur if the leak isn’t taken care of. Your best bet is to call us here at GAC Roofing, as soon as you notice a problem. We can fix minor issues for minor costs.

AIR QUALITY

It should come as no surprise that Scotland is a very humid place, with frequent rainfall.  If there are any damages to your roof that allow water and humidity to seep into your home, it’s easy for mould to grow in sneaky places like exterior walls and ceilings. Mould in the home seriously decreases your air quality. If it’s allowed to continue to grow, it’s not surprising to see family members with increased instances of cold and allergy-like symptoms. Mould is an especially difficult issue to remedy, and can cost a lot more than simply patching a hole in the roof would have cost.

Velux Windows

We supply and install Velux windows whether you have an existing old Velux needing replaced or you would like one installed in a roof space we do it all including internal and external finishes.

  • Adding roof windows improves your space by increasing natural light.
  • A roof window can make the room appear larger and brightens the space.
  • Increased ventilation from roof windows can improve the indoor climate of your home by removing humid air and odours.

Frequent ventilation is vital to ensure a healthy indoor environment and air quality. When you cook, shower, sleep, or even have guests over, the humidity in your home rises. If you don’t remember to ventilate, this can ultimately lead to issues with condensation and mould.
